Psoriasis <\/span>It is a chronic, non-contagious autoimmune disease that affects the skin and joints.<\/strong> <\/span>It usually causes red, scaly patches to appear on the skin. These scaly patches, caused by psoriasis, are called psoriatic plaques (areas of inflammation from excessive skin production). The skin quickly builds up in these areas and takes on a silvery-white hue. They most commonly appear on the elbows and knees but can affect any part of the body, including the scalp and genitals. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Psoriasis affects approximately 1-3% of the population worldwide. Psoriasis is not contagious and affects men and women equally. It can begin at any age, although the usual age of onset is between 20-35 years. It is due to genetic, immunological, environmental and psychological factors. There are several types of psoriasis, which cause itching in 60-70% of cases. Other risk factors for psoriasis are smoking, sun exposure, seasonal changes, some medications, mainly antihypertensives, as well as stress and alcoholism. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The diagnosis of psoriasis must be made by a Dermatologist, after a clinical examination and a brief history, in order to be accurate and to avoid confusion with other skin diseases such as eczema and scabies. It must be understood that psoriasis is not curable. The treatments that exist mainly aim to reduce symptoms and improve the appearance of your skin for a long period of time. Depending on the type and severity of psoriasis, there are different treatment options. These can be local treatments with steroid preparations, ultraviolet radiation therapy, systemic treatment with injections or combination therapy of the above. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
