Fungal infections are infections caused by microorganisms and include fungal infections of the skin, hair and nails (onychomycosis). They are divided into: <\/p>\n

Tinea versicolor (Pityriasis versicolor): It is a superficial fungal infection. It is caused by the yeast Pityrosporum and primarily affects young adults of both sexes. It is characterized by the appearance of discolored patches with mild scaling and recurs frequently. It appears in areas with high sebum production and moisture, which is why it occurs more often in individuals who sweat heavily, have very oily skin, or wear clothing that does not allow sweat to evaporate (synthetic fabrics). It is mainly located on the trunk and upper limbs, and in tropical regions, it can also appear on the face. The patches can be brown, red, or even achromic (colorless), hence the name pityriasis versicolor (tinea versicolor). Mild itching may also coexist. <\/p>\n

Dermatophytosis: This specific fungal infection affects the keratin layer of the skin, the nails, the hairs. Fungal infections that affect the scalp concern children, while the frequency of onychomycoses increases with the passage of age. The clinical picture differs, depending on the type of the fungus. The most frequent pictures of fungal infection by dermatophytes present an erythematous plaque, clearly demarcated from the surrounding healthy skin, with central healing and peripheral scaling usually on the exposed parts, erythema with mild scaling between the last toes of the foot, broken hairs on the scalp, with a hyperkeratotic plaque, change of part of the color of the nails and detachment of the free edge of these. Several times the symptoms are accompanied by itching. <\/p>\n

  • Antifungal creams for mild cases.<\/li>\n
  • Topical treatment with a medicated cream, gel, or powder containing itraconazole, terbinafine, or ciclopiroxolamine.<\/li>\n
  • Systemic oral therapy with drugs containing itraconazole, terbinafine or ciclopiroxolamine. This treatment is indicated for cases of dermatophyte fungal infections, which cannot last more than 7 days, while it is contraindicated in cases of patient sensitivity. <\/li>\n
