Atopic dermatitis or eczema <\/span>It is a chronic relapsing inflammatory and pruritic skin disease.<\/strong> <\/span>Atopic dermatitis can affect people of all ages. It can be bothersome and in some extreme cases even painful as the skin can blister and crust over, which may ooze. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The symptoms can be described as follows:<\/p>\n

  • Itching<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Redness and rash<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Very dry skin<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Wounds
    <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The exact causes of atopic dermatitis are not clear, but some factors that can worsen eczema include:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Environmental factors, such as heat, allergens (dust, pollen, mold) and contact with irritating substances, such as those contained in soaps, detergents and synthetic or woolen clothing.<\/li>\n
    • Simple viral infections, such as the common cold, can lead to a flare-up of atopic dermatitis.<\/li>\n
    • More serious bacterial or viral infections can worsen the condition. Bacterial infections (mainly staphylococcus) can infect eczematous lesions, giving the skin a picture of intense inflammation with a yellowish complexion and purulent lesions. In this case, antibiotic treatment is mandatory. A serious viral infection of eczema can be caused by the herpes simplex virus, causing extensive and painful skin lesions that can only be treated with specific antiviral treatment. <\/li>\n

      Treatment consists of good hydration of the skin and topical application of pharmaceutical preparations (corticosteroids and calcineurin receptor inhibitors) to treat inflammation when it is in exacerbation.<\/p>\n

      Measures can also be taken to prevent the exacerbation of atopic dermatitis, such as bathing at body temperature, adding hydrophilic oil and using hypoallergenic soap, daily moisturizing of the skin with hypoallergenic lotion or cream, using cotton fabrics, avoiding chemical detergents and foods with preservatives and dyes.<\/p>\n
