Herpes zoster <\/span>It is a viral infection that causes a painful rash.<\/strong> <\/span>Although it can appear anywhere on your body, it most often appears as a single strip of blisters that runs down either your left or right side. Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you have chickenpox, the virus lies dormant in nerve tissue near your spinal cord and brain. Years later, the virus can reactivate as shingles. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Shingles symptoms usually affect only a small part of one side of your body. These symptoms may include: <\/p>\n

  • Pain, burning, numbness, or tingling<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Sensitivity to touch<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • A red rash that begins a few days after the pain<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Blisters with fluid<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Pruritus (itching)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    In some cases, fever, headache, sensitivity to light, fatigue have also been reported.<\/p>\n

    Pain is usually the first symptom of shingles. For some, it can be severe. Depending on the location of the pain, it can sometimes be mistaken for a problem with the heart, lungs, or kidneys. Some people experience the pain of shingles without ever developing a rash. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    There is no known cure for shingles, but early treatment with antiviral medications can speed healing and reduce the risk of complications. These medications include: Acyclovir (Zovirax), Valacyclovir (Valtrex), Famciclovir (Famvir). <\/p>\n

    For severe pain, the doctor may prescribe the following:<\/p>\n

    • Capsaicin ointment<\/li>\n
    • Antiepileptic drugs, such as gabapentin (Neurontin)<\/li>\n
    • Tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline<\/li>\n
    • Substances that numb the affected area, such as lidocaine, via ointment, gel, spray, or skin patch<\/li>\n
    • Medicines containing other substances, such as codeine<\/li>\n
    • Injection containing corticosteroids and local anesthetic<\/li>\n
